20 October 2012 – 26 January 2013 | Ffotogallery, Cardiff
I don’t believe in perfection. I achieved it under a certain system, but there was plenty of room for developing that system.
Nadia Comaneci (first perfect 10 score in Olympic history, Montreal 1976)
Who? Ffotogallery, the national development agency for photography and lens-based media in Wales.
What? Ffotogallery presents a new installation by Jo Longhurst, based on the ideals of the perfect performance and exploring the physical and emotional experiences of elite gymnasts in training and competition. Longhurst presents a study of physicality, liberation, pleasure, achievement, failure, exhaustion and despair through lens-based media and sculptural installations which reference Plato’s ‘Perfect Solids’ and Popova & Rodchenko’s revolutionary experiments with aesthetic forms for the construction of a new, utopian society. The exhibition will be accompanied by the launch of a new publication, Other Spaces, published jointly by Ffotogallery and Mostyn.
When? 20 October 2012 – 26 January 2013
Where? Ffotogallery, Plymouth Road, Penarth CF64 3DH
Why? Sadly, we’re still mourning the end of the Olympics. An interesting study on the idea of physical perfection within sport.
